Large, complex hotels often
feel like confusing mazes for guests. A combination of factors
makes this so, including layouts that can’t be easily conceptualized,
signage that is lacking at key decision points and too hard
to read and understand in other places, elevators and elevator
lobbies that don’t contain adequate wayfinding information,
and inconsistent locations of amenities (like restaurants and
health clubs) from hotel to hotel.
While disorientation in an unfamiliar hotel is annoying at some
times, it is downright life-threatening at other times. If guests
have to find their way out during a fire or other emergency,
they need to know where to go.
Better hotel wayfinding design and clear communication of emergency
egress information is essential for hotel guests’ comfort and
safety.
